The field of psychology, the study of thought and behaviour, takes on many shapes in the world theoretical and applied research. Counselling psychology is considered an applied discipline that emphasizes development and growth throughout the lifespan. Counselling psychologists might assist a client in coping with problems of everyday living, or may help a client through a major life change like illness, family expansion or life after retirement. While the field psychology encompasses a great many specialties, it is generally defined as the study of the experiences and behaviour of organisms. Most psychological studies focus on human behaviours and thought processes. Counselling psychology reflect both the behavioural and humanistic components of human learning in many forms. This area of study usually includes emotional, social, and cognitive learning processes. It tends to focus more on personal and interpersonal functioning across the life span. It can be a very broad field of study encompassing emotional, social, developmental, and vocational concerns.

This specialty field continues to grow and change as new techniques and approaches are researched and demonstrated. It is estimated that there are now hundreds of different strands of counselling techniques and theories. This book offers a look at some of the current research in the field and how it is being used to assist practitioners and clients in various settings. While Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has pushed to the forefront of modern counselling techniques, this book will also introduce you to such practices as mindfulness, motivational interviewing. This book will introduce fundamental research to expose the wide range of topics in this vast field. The studies presented cover challenges in the field, learning styles, teaching approaches, and the many interpersonal, social and emotional impact on learners.
Kris Arriaga holds Ph.D. in Behavioural Neuroscience from Public Research University, Sonora. He is serving as an Assistant Professor at Community College, Minas Gerais. He has keen interest in behavioural theories, counselling psychology, traditional applications in educational and occupational psychology to cutting-edge areas of the field, such as space psychology and eco-psychology. He has contributed several articles to peer-reviewed journals and research papers on psychology. He has also won a "University Excellence in Teaching" award for his outstanding contribution towards the community especially in the higher education programs.
